G-20 Washington Summit commitment on protectionism

Commitment

Reject protectionism, refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services, imposing new export restrictions, or implementing WTO inconsistent measures to stimulate exports within the next 12 months.

Target

No numerical targets set.

Progress

New trade protectionist measures by G-20 countries are increasing. From May to mid-October 2011 the pace of implementation of new restrictions has not slowed down over the previous period. As of mid-October 2011, only 19% of all measures introduced since the beginning of the crisis has been reversed.

Gap

Protectionism is increasing and the commitment to roll back export restrictions has not been followed.

Additionality

New commitment. This commitment has been extended at subsequent G-20 Summits.
